Humanities Programs By Subject

A Study of the Humanities
The humanities represent man’s intellectual, artistic and linguistic pursuit of beauty, understanding and creativity of thought and action, as it relates to the human condition. Although scholars may occasionally disagree on whether a particular subject should be included in the humanities, the lines on the topic are drawn clearer than it may seem at first glance. But the bottom line is that studying the humanities is important in learning how to reason, debate and reach logical conclusions. The humanities prepare students to think on their feet, problem-solve and communicate effectively – skills that employers from every sector appreciate in job candidates.

A broad post-secondary, or college, education has traditionally included a balance of subject matter from the humanities. A general definition provided by Merriam-Webster defines the humanities as “the branches of learning (as philosophy, arts or languages) that investigate human constructs and concerns as opposed to natural processes (as in physics or chemistry) and social relations (as in anthropology or economics). The Free Dictionary defines the humanities with a few specifics, stating that the humanities are “the languages and literatures of ancient Greece and Rome, the classics” and that they are also “those branches of knowledge, such as philosophy, literature and art, that are concerned with human thought and culture; the liberal arts”.

Courses or majors in the humanities generally fall under the liberal arts, or vice versa, in most colleges. They may include literature, history, fine arts (including performing arts), philosophy, ancient and modern languages (including Greek and Latin), theology, education, critical thinking, formal debate, law and public speaking. Additional subjects may be included as well. These topics, some of which are particularly conducive to online study, help to set students on a path of revelation and knowledge that opens doors to multiple employment opportunities. Each humanities subject area focuses on a specific aspect of the human condition; and some topics, like music and art, allow personal immersion and aesthetic benefit to individual students.

The humanities encourage thoughtful observation and analysis, as well as deeper insight into human life and suffering. By looking back to gain a historical perspective, it is possible to look forward with experiential insight and wisdom. This process is helpful in developing the thought processes necessary to discover how best to plan for and deal effectively with the future, especially as it relates to business, education and artistic pursuits. Students who grasp the value of the humanities and embrace the knowledge inherently available for digestion and reflection, will undoubtedly enjoy a gold mine of opportunity and advancement based simply upon the ability to think independently or ‘out of the box’, as some may describe it. The wisdom gained by studying the humanities also illuminates a less selfish view of life, one th at challenges individuals to regard others with respect and accept responsibility for actions that may impact those within and without our immediate circle of influence.

Those who choose a major in the humanities often seek to learn more about the world around them in the context of the human condition; or they may be interested in casting a wide net of discovery to find out about possible vocations in this multifaceted field. The knowledge reaped from humanities studies leads to life-long abilities and aesthetic enjoyment that are conducive to satisfying careers in or involving education, law, the arts, writing, history, politics, public speaking, multicultural understanding, interdisciplinary skills, historical perspective. And those who go on to attend law school after earning a humanities degree will appreciate the excellent preparation, including reasoning and research skills, that enable the passing of the LSAT (Law School Aptitude Test) and successful study of the law. A humanities degree offers a wealth of opportunity and vision; and those who are seekers will likely feel at home in its pursuit.
